In a quiet suburb of Copenhagen, the police make a gruesome discovery: a young woman is found brutally murdered in a playground with one of her hands missing. Hanging nearby is a small figurine made of chestnuts. The ambitious young detective Naia Thulin and her reluctant new partner, Mark Hess, are assigned to the case. Their investigation soon links the creepy clue to a politician, Rosa Hartung, whose daughter mysteriously disappeared a year earlier. As more bodies are found with the same calling card, Thulin and Hess must race against time to decode the chestnut man's grim message and catch the killer.
